JESSE LOVE LEADS 80 LAPS AT CHARLOTTE, CLOSES TO WITHIN TWO POINTS OF CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
Runner-up finish puts defending champion within striking distance with four races remaining.
CONCORD, N.C. (October 12, 2026) — Jesse Love continued his pursuit of a second consecutive NASCAR championship Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, delivering one of his strongest performances of the season in the Blue Cross NC 300. Behind the wheel of the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, Love led a race-high 80 laps before finishing second, closing to within just two points of the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series championship lead.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, the 300-mile event was postponed until Sunday evening due to weather. With qualifying not held, the starting lineup was determined according to the NASCAR rulebook, placing Love third on the grid. The defending champion wasted little time establishing himself as one of the drivers to beat, demonstrating impressive speed aboard the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet on Charlotte's demanding 1.5-mile oval.
Love demonstrated speed and consistency throughout the evening, finishing second in both Stage 1 and Stage 2 while collecting valuable championship points. As the race progressed, he remained firmly in contention for the victory, battling Corey Day and Justin Allgaier in an intense fight at the front of the field.
With 17 laps remaining, Allgaier brushed the outside wall, allowing Love and Day to move ahead and set the stage for a dramatic finish.
A late caution brought the field back together for a restart with 10 laps remaining. Day capitalized on the opportunity, making a daring three-wide move beneath Love and Allgaier along the backstretch to take the lead.
Love continued to apply pressure over the closing laps but ultimately crossed the finish line just 0.728 seconds behind Day.
Despite coming up one position short of victory, Love's performance demonstrated the speed and determination that have made him a championship contender throughout the 2026 season.
"At the end, the 17 was not quite as good as we were, but just good enough that, when he took my air away, it was really hard to make up ground," Love said. "I wish I could have had that one back, but I'm still proud of myself for driving really hard and doing a lot of things right tonight."
The runner-up finish marked Love's 10th top-five and 16th top-10 result of the season, further strengthening his championship position.
Championship Battle Tightens
With five races completed in the nine-race Chase, the championship picture has become increasingly competitive.
Love leaves Charlotte second in the standings with 2,292 points, just two behind championship leader Sheldon Creed, who has 2,294. Corey Day sits third with 2,287 points, followed by Justin Allgaier with 2,279.
For Love, the result represents another important step toward defending the championship he captured in 2025.
With four races remaining, every stage point, finishing position, and on-track decision could play a significant role in determining the eventual champion.
Next Stop: Phoenix Raceway
Love and the No. 2 Richard Childress Racing team will return to action Saturday, October 17, for the Timberland PRO 200 at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona.
The 200-mile event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with television coverage on The CW and additional coverage on ESPN Unlimited, MRN Radio, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Following Phoenix, the series will visit Talladega Superspeedway and Martinsville Speedway before concluding the season November 7 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
With the championship lead just two points away, Love heads into the final four races with momentum and an opportunity to become a back-to-back NASCAR champion.
